The short verdict

ClickUp packs more into one subscription than any other project tool we’ve researched: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, goals, and time tracking, with the most generous free plan in the category and no seat minimum. The price of all that power is complexity — expect a real learning curve — and pricing is currently in flux, with promotional rates on a brand-new plan lineup.

Ideal for: small teams (roughly 3–20 people) that want one app to replace several subscriptions and are willing to invest time in setup.
Look elsewhere if: your team wants the simplest possible tool (see our Trello review), or you need locked-in price certainty for the next 12 months.

What ClickUp does

ClickUp is an all-in-one work platform. Instead of paying separately for a task manager, docs app, chat tool, and time tracker, one ClickUp workspace covers tasks, subtasks, documents, whiteboards, chat, goals, dashboards, calendars, and time tracking. The trade-off for that breadth is depth of setup: Spaces, Folders, Lists, multiple views, and automations all arrive on day one, which is why “hard to learn” is the most consistently cited drawback across independent reviews.

ClickUp pricing (verified October 30, 2026)

ClickUp recently replaced its plan lineup. The current plans, read directly from clickup.com/pricing:

PlanPriceBillingNotes
Free Forever$0Free foreverNo credit card required
Core$9/user/monthBilled annuallyPromotional — regular price $12 shown struck through; no end date stated
Business$17/user/monthBilled annuallyPromotional — regular $25 struck through; “Most Popular”; includes AI Standard models
EnterpriseCustom—Adds AI Notetaker; talk to sales
MAX$100/user/monthBilled annuallyPromotional — regular $120 struck through; full Max AI engine

Three catches worth knowing before you budget:

  1. The $9/$17/$100 prices are promotional. ClickUp shows regular prices ($12/$25/$120) struck through, but states no promo end date. Budget for the possibility that you renew at the higher figure.
  2. Monthly prices aren’t published. The pricing page shows annual billing only. Don’t trust third-party pages quoting monthly figures for the new plans — several still describe the old lineup (Unlimited $7, Business $12), which no longer exists for new workspaces.
  3. Upgrading upgrades your entire workspace. Every member becomes a paid seat — there’s no per-person upgrade, and billing is per workspace. There is no seat minimum, which is ClickUp’s real edge over Monday.com (see comparison below). Paid plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Editorial summary only — pricing changes often. Confirm the current price on the official ClickUp pricing page before buying.

Free Forever: what’s actually free

The free plan is genuinely usable, not a trial in disguise (ClickUp’s own FAQ: “this is so much more than a trial”):

  • Unlimited tasks, subtasks, and members — guests are free too, with full create/edit permissions
  • 60 MB storage — and only file attachments count against it; tasks don’t
  • 100 automations/month (per an October 2026 third-party check of the pricing page)
  • Up to 40 lists per Space and 100 folders per Space (per a September 2026 check)
  • 1 form; collaborative docs, kanban, calendar, sprint management, time tracking, and video calls included

Limits to note: paid features (Gantt charts, custom fields) get a small number of one-time uses that don’t reset — once used up, that feature locks until you upgrade, though no data is lost.

AI pricing

AI is now bundled into tiers, not sold separately: Business includes unlimited standard AI models; Enterprise adds the AI notetaker; MAX includes the full AI engine (AI fields, notetaker, image generation, autopilot agents, dashboard cards). Older articles citing a $9/user/month “Brain” add-on describe the retired lineup — ignore them.

Monday.com per-seat prices are from converging October 2026 third-party sources (its official price cards are script-rendered); Monday’s 3-seat minimum and 14-day trial are from its official pricing FAQ, read October 30. Trello prices are first-hand from trello.com/pricing.

Which should you pick? ClickUp if you want maximum capability per dollar and can handle setup complexity. Monday.com if you want guided structure with less configuration (but budget for the 3-seat minimum and bucket pricing). Trello if your team will abandon anything complicated — it’s the cheapest and simplest, and the easiest to actually adopt. Full comparisons: Monday.com review · Trello review.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • The most generous free plan in project management — unlimited tasks and members, while Monday.com caps free at 2 seats and Trello at 10 collaborators.
  • A true all-in-one: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, goals, time tracking, and dashboards in one subscription that can replace several paid apps.
  • No seat minimum and a lower entry price than Monday.com — a 2-person team can run free; a 5-person team pays $45/month on Core annual.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.

What could be better

  • The steepest learning curve in the category — consistently cited across independent reviews. Budget real onboarding time or adoption stalls.
  • Pricing is in flux: promotional rates with no stated end date, a brand-new plan lineup, and no published monthly prices.
  • Upgrading upgrades the entire workspace — every member becomes a paid seat, with no per-person option.
  • Guest-seat allowances on paid plans are documented with legacy plan names, so the exact numbers are provisional.

Verdict in one line

The most capable project tool per dollar for small teams willing to invest a week in learning it.

Who should use ClickUp — and who shouldn’t

Use ClickUp if: you’re a small team drowning in app subscriptions and want one workspace for tasks, docs, chat, and time tracking — and someone on the team will own the setup.

Consider alternatives if: your team resists new tools (Trello’s simplicity wins on adoption), you need price certainty for annual budgeting (wait until the promo pricing stabilizes), or you want white-glove onboarding (Monday.com’s guided setup is smoother).

How this review was researched

This review is based on documented research, not a hands-on trial — WiseToolHub has not run ClickUp as a paying team. Pricing, plan names, free-plan limits, and AI bundling were read directly from clickup.com/pricing on October 30, 2026. Monday.com’s seat minimum and trial terms are from monday.com/pricing (same date); Trello’s prices from trello.com/pricing (same date). Where the official page couldn’t be read directly (Monday.com’s script-rendered price cards), we used multiple dated October 2026 third-party sources and labeled them as such. Anything we couldn’t verify is flagged rather than stated as fact. See how we pick tools and about us.

Frequently asked questions about ClickUp

How much does ClickUp cost?

Free $0 forever. Paid plans billed annually: Core $9/user/month, Business $17, MAX $100 — all currently promotional (regular prices $12/$25/$120), with no stated end date. Enterprise is custom-priced. Monthly prices aren't published on ClickUp's pricing page.

Is ClickUp really free?

Yes. The Free Forever plan includes unlimited tasks, subtasks, and members with no credit card required. Practical limits: 60 MB of file storage, 100 automations a month, and one-time caps on paid features like Gantt charts.

Is ClickUp hard to learn?

Honestly, yes at first. The learning curve is the most consistently cited drawback across independent reviews — Spaces, Folders, Lists, views, and automations all arrive on day one. Teams that invest in setup tend to stay; teams that don't often drift back to simpler tools.

ClickUp vs Monday.com — which is cheaper?

ClickUp, in most cases. A 5-person team pays $45/month on ClickUp Core vs about $60/month on Monday.com Standard (annual billing) — and ClickUp has no seat minimum while Monday.com requires 3 paid seats minimum.

Does ClickUp offer a free trial?

There's no time-limited trial because the Free Forever plan serves that role. Paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
